FAQs

What is Low FODMAP?

The Low FODMAP diet plan, although called an elimination diet, is not a weight loss plan. A Low FODMAP diet seeks to limit foods that have been proven to aggravate the gut and cause IBS symptoms. The diet is best undertaken with the support of a dietitian or healthcare professional, and begins with a 2 to 6 week period of high restrictions. Certain foods can usually then be slowly re-introduced.

FODMAP stands for:

Fermentable: carbohydrates that are broken down by microorganisms (bacteria) in the gut to produce alcohol or organic acids

Oligosaccharides: 'oligo' means a few individual sugars that are joined together

Disaccharides: two sugar molecules (Lactose; found in dairy products)

Monosaccharides: one sugar molecule

And Polyols: sugar alcohols

In short, FODMAP foods are a group of poorly absorbed fermentable short chain carbohydrates that can lead to excessive fluid and gas production, often causing gastrointestinal discomfort (e.g. bloating, abdominal pain and distension in some people).

What are common IBS symptoms?

When suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), some people experience only mild to moderate symptoms, while others can experience debilitating symptoms which can affect their quality of life. Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, and while these are not exclusive to IBS, some symptoms can include abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhoea and constipation, abdominal bloating, mucus present in the stools, and nausea. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

If you have been diagnosed with IBS, our range of low FODMAP ready made meals could be right for you.
